Will This New Cognitive Therapy Program Help Cancer Survivors with Lingering Effects from “Chemo Brain?”

One of the scariest aspects of my cancer experience was feeling like I was losing my mind. It wasn’t expected, and it certainly wasn’t explained to me. But, I later found out that “chemo brain” is a real condition for many cancer patients You know the commercial. “This is your brain on drugs” and the egg cracks open?  Well, that’s about how it felt. Your brain feels dislodged in your head. Fortunately the effects subside over time but not always completely. This causes anxiety among some survivors who wonder if they will ever feel the same.

Fortunately medical research is underway to find ways to alleviate the effects. Dr. Robert Ferguson with University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute led a study on how certain cognitive therapies can help cancer patients dealing with memory loss. He joins me June 13th to discuss what you can do to improve your brain function after chemo. Hey!  It’s not just about women who undergo cancer treatment who can benefit from what the doctor has to say. Let’s face it: cognitive therapies can help many of us dealing with “brain farts” from menopause.

Diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, These Women Defy the Odds and Ignore Statistics

Continuing my celebration for National Cancer Survivors Month, I visit with two women diagnosed with pancreatic cancer who refuse to let their diagnosis trim their wings. Pancreatic cancer is a bit scary. I watched my paternal grandmother deal with this cancer. There are no reliable tests for early detection, and the average survival is five years. But  Diane Borrison , diagnosed in her 60s, and Liz Jurcick diagnosed in her 30s,  defy odds and ignore statistics. They both work in advocacy for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network www.pancan.org. 877-573-9971
