The cover story in our new digital Five to Thrive magazine describes how colorful foods kill cancer. This is a foundational concept within the Five to Thrive diet. But as we point out in that article, there are exceptions to every rule. In fact, there are several non-colorful foods that should make a regular appearance on your weekly menu.

Here is a list of our top five white food winners and why we feel they are so important.

  1. Mushrooms. For decades compounds in mushrooms have been the focus of anticancer research throughout the world. All varieties of mushrooms are rich in vital nutrients such as vitamin D, and also contain polysaccharide and beta-glucan components that have been shown to enhance overall health (especially immune health). And they taste great!
  2. Oats. Oats are a great source of important minerals and soluble fiber. While most of the studies involving oats are for heart health, specifically lowering cholesterol, other studies show that oats can help lower blood sugar levels and that the fiber in oats can assist with optimal digestion and detoxification.
  3. Garlic. Garlic contains important vitamins and minerals and has been the subject of thousands of studies. In addition to protecting against heart disease, garlic stimulates the immune system and has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties. Garlic has also been shown to offer protection against some cancers. Of course, one of the main benefits of garlic is the flavor it adds to many of our favorite foods.
  4. Onions. Onions are similar to garlic in that they contain health-promoting sulfur compounds, as well as key vitamins and minerals. Onions also contain quercetin, which is a flavonoid shown to have multiple health benefits. Onions have been shown to be a heart-healthy food, as well as an effective way to lower blood sugar levels. Preliminary test tube and animal studies also show that compounds in onions can kill cancer cells.
  5. Ginger. This spicy botanical is most known for its soothing effects on the digestive system; however, it is also an effective anti-inflammatory agent. In addition to treating nausea, motion sickness, and other gastrointestinal distress, it has also been used in clinical studies to relieve osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
