This Ice Queen Has a Heart -Warming Story – Fearless Fabulous You July 6

According to the American Cancer Society more than 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and another 15,000 lose their lives to the disease. One reason is there is no effective means of early detection for ovarian cancer, so it is often discovered at an advanced stage.

Paulette Fox watched her mother, Sari,  battle ovarian cancer for seven years and eventually succumb to the disease. As her health worsened, Sari could no longer eat regular food and became noticeably weaker. Paulette took a leave of absence as a litigation attorney in New York City to care for her mother.

At the suggestion of her mother’s doctors, Paulette started feeding Sari ice chips to keep her hydrated. As a former cancer patient myself I can attest to the need to hydrate often and the pleasure of sucking on a frozen treat to alleviate dry mouth and offset the lingering metallic taste from the chemotherapy.

Paulette started mixing flavorful batches of “nutritional ice chips” with fresh fruits and other natural ingredients for her mother. She notes they were not meant to “save her mother” but to nourish, hydrate and comfort her in her final days.

In 2011 after embarking on a soul searching trip to Bali after her mother’s death, Paulette came up with the idea of LifeIce, a line of healthy frozen cubettes® . Initially born from the idea of helping people in cancer treatment, LifeIce has expanded to become a healthy snack popular for moms to serve their children and adults to enjoy post workout in a smoothie or popped in your mouth as a refreshing snack. LifeIce also has  a following in the cocktail crowd circuit as a flavorful natural ingredient.

BERRY POPS

I first met Paulette when LifeIce made her debut at the Summer Fancy Food Show a few years ago, and we’ve kept in touch. I’ve enjoying watching her grow her brand and continue to honor her mother’s memory by working closely with organizations such as the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, a not-for-profit which funds scientific research to help lead to more effective  identification, treatment and ultimately a cure for ovarian cancer.
